Mark Taggart began Thatching in 1992. Trained by Thatching Advisory Services Ltd in Berkshire England under the tutelage of Bob West.
Returning to thatch in Northern Ireland he has worked on a number of Historical Thatched cottages and specialised in New Build Thatching in NI.
He works in both Combed Wheat Straw (sparred/ scolloped on) and Water Reed (Sparred / Scolloped on for Historical Cottages or Screw fixed for Newbuild thatch / thatching.
He is a strong advocate in the use of the Dorset Model which specifies a 1 hr Fire Board below the New Build Thatch. This fire board not only gives a 1hr fire rating and renders the Thatch as a Sacrificial roof covering but also repels the water used by the fire brigade(Water damage causing most of the damage on a Thatched Building) as well as allowing a fire man to safely stand on the board whilst creating a fire break in the Thatch.
He is both friendly and veracious and will vehemently defend both his choosen craft andhis customers interests.
He does not work Sundays.
