Cinemas
We are situated in the picturesque town of Lymington on the edge of the New Forest.
This cinema is a grade 2 listed building being a former 18th Century Malt House and Brewery. The Oast cowl of the former brewery can still just be seen in this photo on the roof of the right hand wing. The cowl is almost directly above where the stage and cinema screen is now situated.
Like many old building this one is said to be haunted by a French refugee who died in 1793 whilst in exile from the French Revolution. It also at one time housed a German garrison and was also used in Victorian times as a roller skating rink when originally it was lit by gas. The building became a community centre in 1949. The main room being converted to a 110 seat cinema and theatre in 1980. Staffed by a team of enthusiastic volunteers, this is the only public cinema in the New Forest.
The building is also the home of Lymington Players, our popular amateur dramatics society.
