About C K W Parrot Rescue

WHAT CKW PARROT RESCUE IS ABOUT For many years we have been rescuing and rehabilitating parrots. We have had parrots brought in to the rescue centre in appalling conditions which have been seized by other organisations, and trusted to ourselves. We have also had parrots brought to ourselves because members of the family have passed away and sons and daughters do not want the parrots as they feel they cant give them the time which they need. We have also had parrots which have been found in people’s gardens, and after extensive advertising and putting it on the web no owners have come forward. All parrots left to us are re homed some go back in to there home environment some that can’t be trusted because they are aggressive our even wild caught go in to breeding. The biggest problem we see, and one of the most common, is feather plucking. The most common question we are asked is why the bird has started to do this and we must answer that there could be several reasons from illness, bad diet or, most common, a psychological problem. The latter is most common in African Greys who seem to suffer from stress more than most other parrots and moving their cage could be enough to trigger the plucking. Several things can be done to remedy the condition, initially making sure that the bird is on a very good diet, i.e. diet such as Kaytee or Harrison’s, together with vegetables such as broccoli, spinach and carrot. We also give our birds sweet corn, pasta and fruits such as apple, pomegranate and, for a special treat, nuts, natural yoghurt and an odd segment of orange. Parrots also need toys to play with. Another cause of plucking appears to be having a parrot’s wings clipped as this interferes with the bird's mobility and causes stress, alternatively a lack of bathing facilities can have the same effect. We spray all our birds at least twice weekly - three times in winter when we tend to use central heating, which creates a dry atmosphere. We believe the earlier the bird is caught plucking the easier it is to cure. If adjusting diet and bathing does not correct the plucking a visit to the Vet may be required to check for any health problems. The worst thing to do is leave the problem too long as it can become a habit. As a last resort the Vet can fit a collar but it should not be assumed that this would affect a cure as we have found that occasionally birds revert to feather plucking as soon as the collar is removed. We are starting 2008 with 148 parrots rescued by ourselves and rehabilitated (fostered) since we started, all those years ago. If you are interested in fostering a parrot, parakeet, or conure then e-mail or write to us and we will put you on the waiting list. Please be aware that you will be vetted and must live within a 15 mile radius of Oldham, greater Manchester, and have a suitable cage for the bird that you are rescuing, or purchase a suitable cage. And a little knowledge about the bird you wish to rescue. If you rescue a bird from us there is no charge for the bird and no donation is required. We will have the bird tested at a vet at no cost to you for a health check. We only insist that we can call at anytime to check on the bird’s health and condition. The bird will never be yours it will always belong to ckw parrot rescue, and be returned to us if a problem occurs in your circumstances, and we will find it a new home. We will do checks on the bird’s well being at anytime and the bird will be removed if we feel that it is being neglected in anyway. in the past we have placed a parrots in a foster programme only to find at a later date it as been sold on, since that happened we have revised our adoption papers, which are signed by the adoptee with a clause stating that court action will be taken against anyone that try’s to sell there adopted bird. These parrots have been left in our care by members of the public and other rescue organisations and we are committed do our upmost to find the right home for their beloved bird.
